OBJECTIVE
To run through the streets and alleys without getting caught by the cop

EQUIPMENT
Open space, pinnies

DIRECTIONS:

Layer 1 – familiarization with the play area and cues

- Have students line up in 4 equal rows, spaced out evenly, and facing the same direction.
- Have students spread arms out so fingers are just touching the person’s on either side of them.
Streets are formed when players’ arms form longer sections, and Alleys are shorter (refer to diagram below)

Layer 2 – the game
- Select a cop to chase a robber (each wearing different coloured pinnies) through the streets and alleys.
- Start in Streets position with the cop and robber on opposite sides
- On “GO” the cop must chase the robber, and when you call out either Streets or Alleys the players forming the walls must turn and face the appropriate direction
- If caught, they you choose who gets the pinnies for the next round.
- Make sure to select new a new cop and robber each round so everyone gets a chance, and match them up as evenly as possible to make it fair (switch runners if robber still hasn’t been caught in 45 seconds, etc.)
- As the caller, it’s your responsibility to make sure that the cop and robber have a fair game, call Streets/Alleys slower or faster depending on if the game is too easy for either player

MODIFICATIONS
- Add more cops/robbers
- Move people around to make some streets/alleys longer than others, or have breaks in the walls

SAFETY CUES
- Keep head up when running
- When forming streets/alleys everyone should always turn in the same direction
- Don’t run through the walls
- Keep arms rigid when turning, but be careful not to hit anyone running
